Build on your GCSE programming
A level Computer Science
Explore our two A level Python books while the online A level Computer Science course is in preparation.
The online course is coming soon
The platform’s current Computer Science study pathways are OCR and AQA GCSE. A full online A level pathway is not available yet. We will publish its scope and access details when it is ready.
The books below focus on programming and algorithms. They do not cover a whole A level specification or imply that every topic is assessed by every board.
Two books to take your Python further
Python A Level · Part 1: Recursion, Trees and BFS
Trace recursive calls, explore trees and use breadth-first search to find routes through graphs and grids. Bring the ideas together in a tested route planner.
Python A Level · Part 2: DFS, Backtracking and Sorting
Explore one branch at a time with depth-first search. Build backtracking solutions, order dependent tasks and use quicksort before creating a tested study planner.
These volumes have been created as part of the AlgoPath Python series. Their detail pages include chapter contents and a short introduction to the ideas. Contact us about obtaining a copy and the formats available. Book and online course access are separate.
Where to begin
Before studying recursive trees and graph searches, practise functions with return values, loops, lists, dictionaries and row and column indices. Python GCSE Advanced is the preceding book; the GCSE Advanced coding course offers programming practice.
A breadth-first search works through successive levels; a depth-first search follows a branch before returning. Learning to trace both gives you a foundation for reasoning about routes, dependencies and choices.
British Informatics Olympiad + Beyond A level
The next book in the series is coming soon. It will focus on the British Informatics Olympiad and programming challenges beyond A level. See the book-series placeholder.
